Hey loves, welcome to today’s post and today we will be looking at habits you should have dropped since 2020. So my last two posts has been on habits, the first being how to cultivate good habits that sticks following ten simple strategies and great habits that will change your life in 2021. If you haven’t checked them out be sure to do so after reading this.

Habits That You Should Have Left Behind in 2020

1. People pleasing

It’s so easy to fall into the trap of people pleasing. You just want to please everyone, you don’t want anyone to hate you and want everyone to like you. Sometimes it can also be that you don’t want to say no to someone so you end up doing what the person wants you to do or you just don’t want to see their bad side by not doing what they want. People pleasing is a complete waste of time and energy. Do what you want to do, they all wouldn’t like you anyway. Prioritize yourself, if you don’t want to do it by all means, don’t! Don’t try to please everyone because you’ll not like yourself for that plus it’s really draining too.

Do yourself a favour and please yourself instead of other people because in the end you are what truly matters.

2. Procrastination

This is one big bad habit a lot of us are guilty of, myself included. It’s so easy to put something off, well I will do it later until later becomes never. One thing I’ve started doing is just doing what I want to do immediately I realize I need to do it if not I’ll most likely forget about it or put it off when it comes up again or just decide it’s not worth my energy. We all need to quit this or at least minimize it so we can be able to work effectively.

3. Being too hard on yourself

This is something I don’t really do because I don’t like stress and being hard on myself is stressful enough and it most often leads me to overthinking or comparing myself to someone else so I’ve learnt to treat myself with delicate care and compassion. Don’t be too hard on yourself, if where you are at isn’t where you want to be, that’s fine, just keep moving. You will surely get to your destination as long as you don’t give up. There’s no point in beating yourself up in what is, what could have been or what is to come. Just breathe and take it easy.

4. Overthinking

Overthinking is so draining, it just drains you physically and mentally. There’s no point at all in overthinking things because it can lead to anxiety and you don’t want that. Quit overthinking the little things and even if it’s a big thing it will still be fine in the end. Yes it’s okay to think about your next plan of action but don’t think too much about your past actions because you can’t change them and overthinking makes you think negatively and drain you of your happiness and we all want to be happier this year.

5. Comparing yourself to others

“Oh my gosh, look how she’s living, she just bought a car and I don’t even have a bicycle to my name. I haven’t even achieved anything. ”

I know in our hearts of hearts we’ve all compared ourselves to someone at one point. Comparing yourself to someone doesn’t do you any good. Looking at this statement above, how do you think the speaker will feel after saying that? Will he/she be proud of themselves?

There’s no need to compare your behind the scenes to somebody else’s highlight. Understand that your journey is different and the person might have been working for that for a long time and you just starting cannot magically reach that level. Good things take time, stop the habit of comparing yourself to others.

One tip that has worked for me is staying of posts that can trigger that and lately I’ve been seeing people my age buying Benz, Range Rover and all those high end cars and seriously it doesn’t bother me because I don’t know what they did to get that and I know our timing is completely different so there’s no need to beat myself up that my life is dull and I’m not “living life” yet because I know I still will. 6. Living in the past

You need to live in the now, stop dwelling in the past. Move on from all the what could have been, what was and what ifs. It’s time to move on and let go past hurt and pain. Live in the now, think good thoughts about your future. Because things didn’t turn out well in the past doesn’t mean it’s always going to be like that. It’s okay to be present and live your life focusing on right now and not then.

7. Feeling insecure

I know we all have something we feel insecure about but learning to accept yourself and your faults will really change things. You are not supposed to be perfect, no one is. If you have a flaw somewhere, someone else has worse. Stop feeling bad because you don’t look a certain way or have a certain thing. It’s how you take it that matters, you can choose to be ashamed and feel dejected or you can choose to own it.

8. Being Negative

If you are constantly thinking negative thoughts and speaking negative things to yourself and others soon enough no one will want to hang around you. No one wants to around someone that constantly sees the bad in all situations. You don’t have to be like that, stop the negative self talk, stop doubting yourself, stop hating yourself. Learn to speak good things to yourself and others, it’s not going to cost you anything and it will definitely make you feel better. Be positive, it doesn’t matter what the situation is or what you’ve been through. Good things still happen, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, be your light as well as a light to others. Be positive and help others be positive. Negativity is not something anyone likes and I know sometimes you can’t just help it but you can try by saying or thinking something positive each day until it becomes a habit. Leave negativity and embrace positivity, it is what’s best for you.

    One other habit to leave behind is to stop believing everything you see on social media!!!!

While I don’t subscribe to the idea of setting New Year’s resolutions, I do believe that the start of a new year is a great opportunity to draw a line in the sand when it comes to considering our bad habits or the development of new habits. It gives you that feeling of a ‘clean start’ which can be incredibly motivating. This year, I am vowing to believe in myself more because I know that my self-criticism has been holding me back from achieving some of my goals.

  17. Not me reading this and still doing 7/8 haha! My worst one is definitely overthinking, I completely let my mind run away with the smallest of thoughts and all it does is make a bad situation out of something that never really existed! But here’s to working on changing those things in 2021!

  25. These are all so true, I read somewhere that we’re all becoming ‘overambitious snowflakes’ because we’re so hard on ourselves we feel like we’re constantly failing! Great post, I really wnjoyed reading.
